  • Late afternoon: Search for the Wrocław Dwarfs (krasnale) — 400+ bronze figurines hidden around the city
  • Evening: Dinner in the Market Square area; try żurek (sour rye soup) and pierogi
The Market Square is especially magical after dark — the Gothic Town Hall is beautifully lit and the restaurants around the square come alive.
Day 02 Museums, Islands & Departure Wrocław

  • Late morning: Stroll Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski), the oldest part of the city, and watch the lamplighter light the gas lamps at dusk
  • Afternoon: Visit Szczytnicki Park and the Japanese Garden before catching the train to Kraków (~3.5 hrs)

Kraków
Day 03 Arrival, Main Square & St. Mary's Basilica Kraków
  • Morning: Arrive in Kraków, check in near the Old Town
  • Afternoon: Walk the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) — one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, ringed by Gothic and Baroque architecture. Visit the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) and browse amber jewelry stalls
  • Late afternoon: St. Mary's Basilica — hear the Hejnał trumpet call from the tower (sounded every hour) and see the stunning Gothic altarpiece by Veit Stoss, one of the greatest medieval woodcarvings in the world
  • Evening: Dinner at Staropolska Karczma (ul. Sienna 4) — one of Kraków's most beloved traditional Polish restaurants, set in a historic cellar just off the Market Square. Hearty Polish classics: bigos (hunter's stew), pierogi, żurek in a bread bowl, and roast duck. Warm, rustic atmosphere with folk décor. Book ahead — very popular with visitors and locals alike.
The Hejnał trumpet call from St. Mary's tower is played every hour on the hour and cuts off mid-phrase — commemorating a 13th-century trumpeter shot by an arrow warning the city of a Tatar attack. A uniquely Kraków moment. Staropolska Karczma is a 5-minute walk from the Basilica — perfect after the evening visit.
Day 04 Divine Mercy Sanctuary, Kazimierz & Pod Wawelem Kraków
  • Morning — Pilgrimage to Divine Mercy Sanctuary (Łagiewniki): One of the most important Catholic shrines in the world — the Basilica of Divine Mercy stands on the site where St. Faustina Kowalska received her visions of Jesus and the message of Divine Mercy. The miraculous image of the Merciful Jesus is kept here. St. Faustina's relics rest in the chapel and her cell can be visited. The sanctuary was consecrated by Pope John Paul II, her fellow Pole who canonised her in 2000. Allow 2–3 hours for Mass, the chapel, the museum, and quiet prayer. Located in the Łagiewniki district, ~4 km south of the Old Town — take tram 8 or 13.
  • Afternoon: Explore Kazimierz — the historic former Jewish quarter, now a bohemian neighborhood of atmospheric synagogues, galleries, street art, and café culture. Try Alchemia or Kolory for coffee and the full Kraków ambience
  • Late afternoon: Walk the Vistula Riverbank back toward the Old Town — past the Wawel Dragon and the castle walls, a beautiful 30-minute riverside walk
  • Evening: Dinner at Pod Wawelem Kompania Kuflowa (ul. Świętej Gertrudy 26/29) — a legendary Kraków beer hall just steps from Wawel Hill. Enormous portions of traditional Polish food, freshly brewed beer, live folk music, and a wonderfully rowdy atmosphere. Book ahead: +48 12 421 23 36
The Divine Mercy Sanctuary draws millions of pilgrims annually — arrive early on weekdays for a quieter, more reflective visit. The image of the Merciful Jesus with the inscription "Jesus, I trust in You" is displayed above the main altar in the chapel. St. Faustina's simple convent cell and the museum of her life are deeply moving. Pod Wawelem is the perfect joyful contrast in the evening — come hungry!
Day 05 The Group Splits — Zakopane & Auschwitz Kraków / Zakopane
  • 🏔Family → Zakopane (~2 hrs by bus from Kraków Główny): Full day in the Tatra Mountains — hike to Morskie Oko (Eye of the Sea glacial lake, ~9 km trail, 4–5 hrs return), ride the Kasprowy Wierch cable car to 1987m for sweeping panoramic views, and stroll Krupówki promenade for oscypek (smoked mountain cheese). Overnight in Zakopane.
  • Carole & Jim → Auschwitz-Birkenau: Full day guided tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial & Museum (~70 km west of Kraków). Plan 4–5 hours for both camps. Book official guided tour at least 2 weeks in advance — auschwitz.org. Buses and organized tours depart Kraków early morning.
  • Carole & Jim — evening options after Auschwitz:
  • Option A — Travel to Zakopane same evening (~2 hrs from Oświęcim via Kraków): Rejoin the family in the mountains — a beautiful contrast after an intense day, arriving to fresh mountain air and a warm welcome. Buses run via Kraków regularly.
  • Option B — Rest in Kraków overnight, then travel to Zakopane the next morning (Day 6) to meet the family for a second mountain day together.
Option A is recommended if energy allows — the mountain air of Zakopane is restorative after an emotionally intense day, and arriving to the family is a comfort. Option B is equally valid if Carole & Jim prefer a quiet evening. Either way, the whole group reunites in Zakopane for Day 6.
Zakopane — Days 5 & 6
Day 06 Full Day in the Tatras — Whole Family Together Zakopane
  • Morning: Whole family reunited in Zakopane. Breakfast in town — try jajecznica z oscypkiem (scrambled eggs with smoked mountain cheese) at a local góralska restaurant
  • Morning activity: A gentler hike through Dolina Chochołowska (Chochołów Valley) — a wide, peaceful glacial valley with traditional wooden shepherd huts, suitable for all fitness levels including Carole & Jim
  • Afternoon: Thermal Baths — soak in geothermal pools at Termy Chochołowskie or Aqua Park Zakopane. Warm mineral waters fed by Tatra geology — deeply relaxing after the hiking days. Book ahead in July.
  • Evening: Final dinner in Zakopane on Krupówki promenade — try the legendary Zbójnicki Kocioł (shepherd's cauldron stew) with live góralska folk music
Termy Chochołowskie (~20 min from town) is the most scenic thermal spa, with outdoor pools framed by mountain views. Book ahead — fills up fast in July. The Chochołów Valley walk is easy and beautiful — perfect for the whole group including those who need a gentler day.
Zakopane → Kraków → Częstochowa — Days 7 & 8
Day 07 Zakopane → Kraków → Częstochowa Kraków / Częstochowa
  • Morning: Bus from Zakopane → Kraków (~2 hrs). Drop bags at left luggage at Kraków Główny station
  • Midday: Wieliczka Salt Mine (~15 km from Kraków, 2–3 hrs) — a UNESCO World Heritage site with underground chapels, lakes, and sculptures carved entirely from salt. Minibuses run every 20–30 minutes from near the main bus station. Book tickets in advance at wieliczka-saltmine.com
  • Afternoon: IC/TLK train from Kraków → Częstochowa (~1.5–2 hrs). Check in to hotel, freshen up
  • Evening: Stroll the grand Aleja NMP (Avenue of the Blessed Virgin Mary) — the magnificent ceremonial boulevard leading to Jasna Góra, lined with historic tenements and monuments. Visit Jasna Góra briefly at dusk — the illuminated monastery is breathtaking at night, and the atmosphere among evening pilgrims is deeply moving
Book Wieliczka Salt Mine tickets in advance at wieliczka-saltmine.com — sells out on busy summer days. The Kraków → Częstochowa IC train is straightforward on intercity.pl. Accommodation near the monastery in Częstochowa is affordable and plentiful.
Częstochowa — July 2, 2026
Day 08 Jasna Góra, the Black Madonna & Return to Wrocław Częstochowa
  • Already in Częstochowa from last night — a full, unhurried morning awaits at Jasna Góra
  • Morning: Jasna Góra Monastery — Poland's most sacred Catholic site, home to the miraculous 14th-century Black Madonna icon. Open from 5:30 AM. Attend Mass in the Chapel of Our Lady if timing allows
  • At the chapel: The icon is veiled on weekdays between noon–1:30 PM — arrive early morning or after 1:30 PM to see it unveiled. Approach quietly and reverently; many visit on their knees
  • Monastery complex: Explore the Basilica, Knights' Hall, the Treasury Museum (Lech Wałęsa's Nobel Peace Medal, royal votive offerings), 600th Anniversary Museum, and climb the tower (519 steps — tallest church tower in Poland) for panoramic views
  • Via Dolorosa: Inside the monastery, see Jerzy Duda-Gracz's remarkable 18-panel Way of the Cross, gifted as a votive offering — a moving fusion of Polish history and the Passion
  • Afternoon: Stroll the grand Aleja NMP (Avenue of the Blessed Virgin Mary) — the ceremonial boulevard leading from Jasna Góra through the city center, lined with historic tenements and monuments
  • Optional detour: Drive 15 km to Olsztyn Castle ruins — a dramatic 14th-century fortress on a limestone hill, just off the Eagles' Nests Trail, with sweeping views of the Jurassic upland
  • Evening: Continue ~2.5 hrs northwest to Wrocław by train or car, arriving Wrocław evening — rested and ready for the graduation on July 3rd 🎓
Day 8 brings the pilgrimage to a close with a morning at Jasna Góra before the train back to Wrocław for the graduation on July 3rd. Częstochowa draws enormous August pilgrimage crowds, but early July is busy but manageable. Dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees required inside the chapel. Photography is not permitted inside the Chapel of the Black Madonna.
Eagles' Nests Side Trip

If traveling by car from Kraków, consider driving the Trail of the Eagles' Nests (Szlak Orlich Gniazd) — a 163 km route connecting 25 medieval castles between Kraków and Częstochowa through the dramatic Jurassic limestone upland. Key stops include Ogrodzieniec Castle (the largest and most spectacular ruins, used as a filming location for The Witcher), Bobolice & Mirów castles (twin 14th-century fortresses just 1.2 km apart), and Olsztyn Castle just outside Częstochowa. Allow a full day if doing the full route by car.

Wrocław — July 3–7, 2026
July 03 🎓 Graduation Day — Wrocław Wrocław

  • 🏠Day: Visit Jan's sister and brother-in-law at their home in Oława — a personal and special afternoon with family in their own setting
  • Oława town: A charming historic market town on the Odra River with a lovely medieval square — worth a short stroll between the visit and the station
  • 🚂Evening: Return to Wrocław by late regional train — trains run until around 11 PM, so no rush on departure time
Oława is one of the most pleasant small towns in Lower Silesia. The Wratislavia Cantans festival (Sept 3–13) also holds concerts in Oława if you ever return in September!
July 05–06 Free Days in Wrocław Wrocław
  • Rest & explore: Two relaxed days based in Wrocław — revisit favourite spots or discover new corners of the city
  • Suggestions: Panorama of the Battle of Racławice (huge 19th-century cyclorama painting), National Museum, street art in the Nadodrze district, boat trip on the Odra, or the zoo in Szczytnicki Park
  • Day trip option: Książ Castle (~60 km southwest) — one of the largest castles in Poland, dramatically sited above the Pełcznica Valley. Train from Wrocław to Wałbrzych, then bus or taxi
These free days are a gift — don't over-schedule them. Wrocław rewards slow wandering. The evening Market Square with a cold beer and street performers is one of the great simple pleasures of Central Europe.

  • Late afternoon: Cross Charles Bridge toward sunset — flanked by 30 Baroque saint statues and framing magnificent views of Prague Castle
  • Evening: Dinner in the Malá Strana (Lesser Town) neighborhood — less touristy and more atmospheric than Old Town. Try svíčková (braised beef with cream sauce) or duck with red cabbage
Book the Wrocław → Prague train well in advance — the Ex 32 EuroCity is popular in July. Morning departures give a full afternoon in Prague on arrival. Book accommodation in Malá Strana or Vinohrady for a more local feel at lower prices than Old Town.
July 08 Prague Castle, Infant Jesus & Petřín Hill Prague
  • Morning: Prague Castle complex — the largest ancient castle in the world (Guinness record). Buy the combined ticket for St. Vitus Cathedral (Gothic masterpiece; stunning Alfons Mucha stained glass), the Old Royal Palace (Vladislav Hall), and Golden Lane (tiny colored houses; Franz Kafka lived at No. 22). Allow 3–4 hours
  • A special stop for Catholic pilgrims: Church of Our Lady Victorious in Malá Strana — home to the Infant Jesus of Prague, a 16th-century wax statue venerated worldwide for miraculous intercessions. Free entry; deeply peaceful atmosphere. Masses daily
  • Afternoon: Climb Petřín Hill — take the funicular up (or hike through the park) to the Petřín Lookout Tower, Prague's mini Eiffel Tower. Panoramic views at sunset are unforgettable
  • Evening: Stroll back across Charles Bridge at dusk — completely different atmosphere to daytime. The castle is flood-lit gold above the river
St. Vitus Cathedral offers free entry to the nave — you only need a ticket to access the side chapels, crypt, and tower. Sunday Mass at 10 AM (in Czech) is open to all. The Infant Jesus church is a 10-minute walk from the castle down the hill.
July 09 Jewish Quarter & The Family Splits Prague

The Pinkas Synagogue walls are inscribed with the names of 80,000 Czech Jewish Holocaust victims
  • Late morning: Wander the Náměstí Republiky area — see the Gothic Powder Tower and the ornate Art Nouveau Municipal House (free to view the exterior; café inside)
  • The family splits — afternoon departures from Prague:

  • Rest of family → Wrocław: Ex 32 EuroCity direct train (~4 hrs) from Praha hlavní nádraží back to Wrocław Główny
The Jewish Quarter is closed on Saturdays. If July 9th falls on a Saturday, visit on Day 2 instead and swap with the Petřín Hill afternoon. Check jewishmuseum.cz for hours. Both the train and bus to Nuremberg have multiple afternoon departures, so no need to rush goodbyes!
